Memory Essay #3: The “Subject” of Remembrance

This assignment calls for you to use the course readings in conjunction with your own scholarly research in order to write an essay in which you analyze how personal recollection shapes the autobiographical narrative in Vladimir Nabokov’s Speak Memory.

Audience: Undergraduate students thinking of majoring in the interdisciplinary field of “Memory Studies”

Format: 4-6 double-spaced pages; MLA style

(FOR INSTRUCTORS ONLY)

Type: Develop an analytical argument using original research that includes both primary and secondary texts.

Rationale: This assignment represents the apex of conventional academic writing toward which the first two assignments have built. The student engages new theoretical perspectives, which build on earlier concepts, in order to analyze a text. In addition, the student will need to do her own research on biographical context and/or previous scholarly contributions on Nabokov’s text.
